Chemo Hair Gets a Compliment

Share Your Thoughts: Quit Keeping it a Secret

by Christie Perkins

baby blessing, etc 138“I love ‘urs’ hair Mommy.  It’s cute,”  my three year old said as he ran his fingers through my 1/2 inch stub of hair.

His timing could not have been more perfect.  I was laying in bed after a radiation treatment chalking up everything that I’ve lost control over since I started this cancer journey: money, my 1st graders empty reading calendar, my 3 1/2 year old who was still enjoying his soggy diapers, and selling and building a new house.  I was stressing about the day I go wigless in my new ward, and frustrated about my personal power cord fiasco from the chemo treatments…

All these thoughts were buzzing around in my head and bugging me.

And then, there was the issue of my hair.  My fuzzy chick hair had started sprouting.  Each hair was in a race against the other.  While most of the hairs were snail racers there were a few overachievers.  I reminded myself of my grandpa with a few thin smoke curls on top of my head.

Don’t get me wrong.  I like Grandpa…I just don’t want to hang out with his barber.

And here I was again, mourning my hair.  It was taking forever to grow.  What’s the deal?  My leg hairs seemed to have it figured out.

Seriously.

Good thing it was dark.  Tears fell from my eyes and pooled into my ears.  And in the very moment when I think about the ugly hair stage my three year old pipes in: “I love ‘urs’ hair Mommy.  It’s cute.”

Over and over and over he says it again.

My tears take on a new shape. It’s as if he can read my mind. Technically, I know he can’t, he’s just following a prompting.  A thought enters his mind and he tells me.

And it’s the perfect thing to say because I know he loves me anyway.  I needed that.  In his simple sentence my burdens are lighter.

Follow the Thoughts Placed in Your Head

Have you ever been around someone and thought a really nice thought about them?  Did you tell them?  Have you ever realized that maybe that thought was put there as a prompting?  I love this scripture found in Doctrine and Covenants 100:5-6,8.

5 “Therefore, verily I say unto you, lift up your voices unto this people; speak the thoughts that I shall put into your hearts, and you shall not be confounded before men;

6″For it shall be given you in the very hour, yea, in the very moment, what ye shall say.

8″And I give unto you this promise, that inasmuch as ye do this the Holy Ghost shall be shed forth in bearing record unto all things whatsoever ye shall say.”

Tell people the thoughts that come to your head.  Bear their burdens with a simple uplifting word.  There’s a reason that only you get that prompting, it carries a meaning that only you can give.

Don’t keep those thoughts a secret.  For this week focus on sharing your kind thoughts in every opportunity.  See how it affects you and those around you.

Happy sharing.
